It all started as a conversation among friends in September 2010 around the idea of creating a greater quality of life in downtown Wilmington through the “cleaning and greening” of public space. A year later, the seed that was planted broke ground with the formation of 1000 People Who Care, a non-profit organization dedicated to the mobilization of community for the enhancement of public space in downtown Wilmington.
We recognized a lack of unity among our many meaningful downtown organizations and the people in our community who care about them. We also realized that our historic downtown is our cultural center, without which, our city would not be as unique or magical. The more we talked with friends and neighbors we found out that we were not alone…
We have each committed our own time and money to make this vision a reality and we are now reaching out to others among us who genuinely care about our city. By focusing on our community’s assets, inspiration, and potential we can create well-designed and meaningful public spaces that promote people’s health, happiness, and wellbeing. That is our vision – to work together, project- by-project, to restore, beautify, and co-create the best possible downtown experience for ourselves and the many visitors who come to experience Wilmington.
For a modest, tax-deductable pledge, you can help beautify, clean up and green up our city center.
Be strong. Belong.
